Balancing Creativity & Productivity: How I Switch Between Projects
From fortune cookies to finance articles — here's how I stay sharp and productive.
From the bottom of my heart mind
Fresh stories from a Spanish Copywriter.
Only this year, I’ve worked on very different projects:
A creative proposal for a TV commercial
A sales campaign through email marketing, landing pages, and social ads
Writing over 50 quotes for fortune cookies
A script for a football player
Different finance articles
Reviewing a campaign for Mother’s Day
A 360-degree rebranding project
This weekly newsletter about localization copywriting
And more, much more.
I don’t complain—I need this variety of work to keep my brain on and working at full capacity.
But I also recognize that some days, it’s not the easiest to switch from writing a funny fortune cookie quote to creating a compelling SEO article about secure payment authentication through Google Pay.
For me, it’s like putting on different hats. It’s like life: you don’t think and speak the same way with your friends on a Friday night as you do at a family lunch on Sunday or in a Monday morning meeting with your team.
You are the same person, same ideas, same skills, of course. But the perspective and outcome must be different.
Most people will tell you the best thing is to book different time slots for your different clients. That didn’t work for me.
Instead, I discovered I give my best when I know how to combine them.
Let’s say I’m working on a super creative project, but I get stuck on one slide. Easy: I know which topic or task I can switch to in order to think about something else, then come back to the original task with fresh eyes.
IMPORTANT: It doesn’t work like that every time. I found my way (which I know is different from what most productivity/creativity gurus suggest), and you must find yours.
For example, I always do my finance work in the afternoon, when my energy level drops. And I love coming back to creative projects at night, when I get an extra mental boost.
How do you deal with it?
Outside the desk
Where the magic really happens.
🧖♂️ I started going to the sauna last month and I’ve been doing it once or twice a week. Honestly, it's been another creativity boost for me, since it’s a no-phone-just-me time.
🥾 This weekend, I went on a hike with a friend. It was her first time hiking in the mountains… and probably not her last! The weather in Valencia this month is perfect for hiking: plenty of daylight hours and still not too hot.
👶 Another friend had a baby last year, and we went together to the park I grew up in. The last time I was there was probably 15 years ago, and a lot has changed since then.
Make it global, baby
