From the bottom of my heart mind
Fresh stories from a Spanish Copywriter.
Summer is time for traveling.
Even though I try to squeeze some traveling during the year (is less crowded, less expensive and the feeling of freedom is bigger), I still do a big trip on summer. Last Sunday I got into a plane and came to Sri Lanka, where I’m traveling around for 2 weeks.
Not bad (and yes, I have my laptop with me to do some very little work).
And this first summer trip of the year is the perfect excuse to share some unique things related with Spain and the holiday period. Very relevant if you localize for it.
August is the month. Schools are closed, a lot of businesses are closed, most of the people won’t even reply an email until the last week of the month or September. We even have a saying that goes “Hacer el agosto”, which means you make a lot of money (since Spain has a lot of income from tourism, specially during this month).
Less working hours. Some companies apply a different time schedule during July and August in Spain. Instead of having a big lunch break and stay open until late, some businesses decided to set their working ours between 8.00 and 15.00.
The school holidays are long. A bit of June, full July, full August and a bit of September. Almost 3 months were kids don’t have school (but most of the parents have to work). Is very popular to send them to summer camps (either in Spain or abroad), sign them up in summer schools or just leave them with their grandpas.
2 weeks Honeymoon. Did you know that, when you get marry in Spain, is common to have two weeks of paid leave for the Honeymoon? If you work in the travel industry, this is key to target your message for Spanish people.
Lastly, since tourism is heavy in Spain, is always a good idea to use it on your campaigns. It won’t be the same for Madrid (where people leave to the coast) than to Andalusia (where people leave to the north for some colder weather).

💡 Couple of weeks ago I talked about localization at Netflix. Today is Spotify’s turn.
Outside the desk
Where the magic really happens.
✈️ Valencia-Madrid-Doha-Colombo: 30+ hours to get to Sri Lanka. And still, is so worthy.
🇱🇰 Why Sri Lanka? Forest, mountain, sea, local culture, wildlife… it has it all. Also, I’ve friends coming for the last year and they said great things about the country.
🖥️ To enjoy holidays outside the desk, you have to push your work at the desk. This newsletter and the one for next week have been written and schedule from before. Full transparency.
