This week, I’ve been working on different articles about banking fraud. I had a clear briefing, all the SEO information I needed, reference content, and even some related articles on the topic.
And while all of this is great (one of the perks of working with good clients), I was missing something: the specific context for Spain.
Sure, I knew that some of the fraud types we mentioned were common in Spain. But there were others I had never seen here, while some—unfortunately—are very popular. And with these widespread scams, I could provide specific references, screenshots, and even testimonials.
But most importantly, I could truly connect with the Spanish audience. They would immediately recognize the situations, relate to them, and become more aware of future frauds.
Now, this isn’t about my writing or localization skills—it’s about knowing your specific niche (finance) in your specific target country (Spain) and using that knowledge to better serve your audience.
Ideally, this kind of information would be included in the brief. Realistically? It rarely is. In my experience, most brands conduct research for their main market (Germany, the U.S., France, etc.), and when it comes to localization, you have to put your head down, apply all the local knowledge you have, and adapt the content yourself.
This might feel natural to you (after all, you’re an expert in your own country), but not everyone does it—and not everyone appreciates it. So if you go the extra mile, make sure your client knows. Add a note highlighting your additional work—it could lead to more tailored research for your country in the future.
