As a freelancer, I’m lucky to work with different companies and so, with different team structures. And I don’t think I’ve seen 2 organizations that are the same in terms of localization: different names, different roles, different workflows but, at the end, very similar tasks.
In this issue of The Textonality Newsletter (number 45!!! Not bad) I’ll talk about the different structures you can find on localization teams. Since this is a changing industry, I’m sure you’ll be able to find more on your own path.
Localization team: In this case, the company has some size and experience working with different languages, so they have a specific localization team, with a localization manager and different roles devoted to adapting the content to every country.
Marketing team: Sometimes there is not a specific “localization lead” and if most of the job is marketing related, you can be sort of part o the marketing team. This is a great way to be involved not just in the writing side, but also see (and learn) about CRM, growth, paid social, etc.
Product team: Same as before, but instead of marketing, you are more on the UX side.
Content team: This is the one I’ve seen the most (as always, from my experience). In this cases you are in a team with other localization writers, reporting to the Copy/Content Lead.
No team: Yes, this happen too. And it even make sense in some cases, if localization is not a priority of there are few tasks to complete. You are likely to be in touch with a Project Manager and work together on the deliveries.
As I said at the beginning, this is not set in stone and it can change from company to company (and even within the same company over time).

🥳 Today is a bank holiday in Spain. Is fun to have it in the middle on the Summer. I’m back in the north for some hiking and surfing.
🏅 The Olympics are over. A lot to analyze from a localization perspective, with so many countries and people looking at the same thing at the same time from all over the world.
🏥 Do you have some red flags when talking about industries to work for? I do. I’m reading now a novel about the pharmaceutical industry and was thinking a lot about it.
